what is Bulkhead ,strum boxes adn double bottom tanks


Write short notes on followings.

Bulkhead:

The vertical division wall, arranged in the ship's construction is called bulkheads.There are three basic types e.g.water tight ,non water tight and oil tight or tank bulkheads.

Strum Boxes:
A box with perforated sides called Strum Box, which is fitted over the end of each suction pipe. This box streams the water when it is being pumped out and thus prevents solid matter from being drawn in to and cloking the pipes or valves.

Double bottom Tanks.
They support the shop in case of damage to the damage to the bottom and used to store fresh water ,sea water ,bunker oil etc.

Types of Compassess Used on Ships


Types of compasses used on board (Ships).What is Lubber line?
Names and define types of compasses used on board.

(a)
There are two types of compasses that are used on Ships.
1.Magnetic Compass.
2.Gyro Compass.

Magnetic Compass.
It work on the principal of magnetism, i.e. When a magnet needle is suspended freely.

Gyro Compass .
It is operated electrically and points true North . its rapeaters can be fitted in the bridge, wings ,steering gear and in navigational equipment
(b)Lubber Line:
A line on the compass ring wihich indecate fore and aft lines of ship (ship's Head).
